I spent about two and a half decades as a researcher. (My PhD looked at possible causes of childhood leaukemia using heavy-duty statistics.)
What that means in terms of training is that I try very (very!) hard to avoid being a wikitrainer (What I Know Is…) based just on my opinion. No matter how expert someone is, an opinion is just one person’s experience. I worked as a researcher, which means I look at the aggregate of everyone’s experience. You get science, and research, not opinion.
Nothing’s magic of course, so you need to pitch in too, but I promise you that the tools we’ll give you are the best that have been devised so far. How do we know? Because I spend the equivalent of one day a week, every working week, researching new tools. That’s not adding content or making videos or marketing or whatever… that’s just on researching the new tools.
And because of my background as a research scientist , that’s not just internet-fad-level research. Nope. It’s usually going back to the hardcore, original research in the scientific journals. (And yes, that can be as boring as it sounds, but sometimes it’s amazingly exciting, too!)
That was then, this is now
I got more and more frustrated by the fact that really cool people (in universities at first but later just about anywhere!) who knew really cool things (such as how to be more productive) weren’t confident enough and weren’t impactful enough, to get the message out there into the world. The world would be a much cooler place if that information was more widely known!
So that’s what I do now – I help people learn the tools to be more impactful.
Ready for a cliche?
I know it’s a cliche to say you’re passionate about stuff. It makes me want to scream a little bit every time I hear it. But I am, honest!
There’s pretty much no risk, ‘cos I’m so confident you’ll want to stay, so….
What are you all about, Simon?
